The symptom tells only part of the story. A few useful observations can make the first assessment much clearer.
The door sticks or catches
Possible factors include hinge movement, loose fixings, paint build-up, moisture or movement in the door or frame. Note where it catches and whether the issue changes with weather.
It will not latch
The latch and keep may be misaligned, the handle mechanism may be worn, or the door may no longer sit square. Show the gap around the closed door in photos.
The handle is loose
Loose fixings may be simple, but repeated loosening can indicate worn hardware or a damaged fixing point. Avoid continued force if the handle controls an essential exit.
The door rattles
Check whether the latch holds it firmly and whether seals or stops are damaged. External doors also need an appropriate weather and security assessment.
Fire and communal doors
Do not treat these as ordinary joinery. Identify them clearly and use the applicable specification and competent person. Never plane, drill or alter safety-critical components casually.
